Information about Wyoming
Wyoming is a state in the United States of America that is situated in the mountain region of the western part of the country. To its north, Wyoming is bordered by the state of Montana while to its east, it is bordered by the states of Nebraska and South Dakota. To its south, Wyoming shares its border with Colorado while to the southwest and west, it is bordered by Utah and Idaho. Based on the 2010 Census, Wyoming is home to 563,626 people, making it the least populated state in the country. Wyoming also covers an area of 97,814 square miles thus being the 10th largest state in the country. Wyoming is hence the 2nd least densely populated state in the United States.
The western part of the state consists mainly of mountain ranges and the foothills of the Eastern Rocky Mountains. The eastern part of the state on the other hand contains high prairies known as the High Plains. Along with Colorado and Utah, Wyoming is one of only 3 states in the country to have borders which are along straight longitudinal and latitudinal lines instead of being formed by natural landmarks.
Wyoming has a continental and semi arid kind of climate. It is usually windier and drier than most other states in the country and experiences severe extremes in temperature. Summers in Wyoming are usually warm and characterized by rapid cool downs over the night. Winters on the other hand can be extremely cold.
The name of the state comes from the Munsee name “xwe wamank” which means “at the big river flat”. Another source for the name is the Wyoming Valley located in Pennsylvania. The valley is immortalized in the poem “Gertrude of Wyoming” written by Thomas Campbell.
The capital city of Wyoming is Cheyenne which is also the largest city in the state. The nicknames for the state include “The Equality State”, “Big Wyoming” and “The Cowboy State”. The state motto is “Equal Rights”.
