Information about Wisconsin

Wisconsin is a state in the United States of America that is situated in the north central part of the country and is regarded as a portion of the Mid West. To the west, Wisconsin shares a border with the state of Minnesota while to the southwest, it is bordered by Iowa. To its south, Wisconsin is bordered by Illinois while to the east, northeast and north, Wisconsin shares its borders with Lake Michigan, the state of Michigan and Lake Superior respectively. According to the 2010 Census, the state is home to 5,686,986 people, making it the 20th most populated state in the country.

Due to its position among the Great Lakes, Wisconsin features a wide array of diverse geographical features. The state consists of 5 different geographic regions. The northern part of the state consists of the Lake Superior Lowland. South of it, is the Northern Highland which consists of forests with coniferous and hardwood trees. It is home to Timms Hill as well as the Chequamegon Nicolet National Forest. The center of the state is home to the Central Plain which features sandstone formations such as the Dells of the Wisconsin River as well as fertile farmland. The southeastern part of the state features the Eastern Ridges and Lowlands which contains most of the state’s big cities. The final region of the state is the Western Upland which consists of rugged scenery such as bluffs, farmland and forests.

The state is named after the Wisconsin River. Jacques Marquette, a French explorer, happened to be the first ever European to witness the Wisconsin River, back in 1673, and named it “Meskousing”. This was eventually corrupted to “Ouisconsin” by other explorers from France and ultimately, the name was anglicized to its modern variant.

The capital city of Wisconsin is Madison while the largest city is Milwaukee. The nickname of the state is “The Badger State” as well as “America’s Dairyland”. The state motto is “Forward”.
