Information about West Virginia

West Virginia is a state in the United States of America that is situated in the Southeastern and Appalachian regions of the country. The state shares a border with Virginia in the southeast and with the state of Kentucky in the southwest. To the northwest, West Virginia is bordered by Ohio while to the northeast and east it is bordered by Pennsylvania and Maryland respectively. The state of West Virginia has a population of 1,859,815 residents making it the 37th most populated state in the country.

The position of the state means that it is often considered a part of many different geographical segments such as the Southeast, the Upland South and the Mid Atlantic. It is also the only state which is completely within the area that falls under the Appalachian Regional Commission.

The geography of West Virginia consists of a number of mountain ranges and the state is known for its coal mining and logging industries. It is also one of the most karstic regions in the world and is hence a popular choice for caving as well as related research. West Virginia also offers a variety of outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, mountain biking, hiking, white water rafting and skiing.

West Virginia was granted statehood after following the Wheeling Conventions and seceding from the state of Virginia at the time of the American Civil War. West Virginia was admitted into the Union in 1863 and was an important border state during the Civil War. West Virginia is thus the only state to be formed by breaking away from a Confederate state was one of just 2 states that were created at the time of the American Civil War (the other being Nevada, which broke away from Utah).

The capital city of West Virginia is Charleston which also happens to be the largest city in the state. The nickname of West Virginia is “The Mountain State” and the motto of the state is “Montani simper liberi” which is Latin for “mountaineers are always free”.
