Information about Washington
Washington is a state in the United States of America that is situated in the Pacific Northwest part of the country. To the south, Washington is bordered by the state of Oregon while to the east, the state shares a border with Idaho. To the north, Washington shares its borders with the Canadian province of British Columbia while to its west lies the Pacific Ocean. According to the 2010 Census conducted by the United States Census Bureau, Washington is home to a population of 6,724,540 people, making it the 13th most populated state in the country. Washington is thus the 2nd most populated state on the west coast and also the most populated state in all of western USA behind California.
The geography of Washington consists of mountain ranges in the western, northeastern, southeastern and central part of the state along with dense rain forests. There also lies a semi arid basin in the east that is used for intensive agricultural purposes.
The state of Washington was named after the first President of the United States, George Washington. It is thus the only state in the country to be named after a President. Sometimes, the state is referred to as Washington state or the State of Washington in order to distinguish it from Washington D.C., the capital of the country. Quite ironically, the original name of the state was “Columbia” named after the Columbia River. However, the name was changed to Washington as it was thought that the name Columbia could be confused with the District of Columbia.
The capital city of the state of Washington is Olympia while the largest city in the state is Seattle which is the state center for industry, business and transportation. The nickname of the state is “The Evergreen State” while the motto of the state is “Aiki” which is a Chinook Wawa word which means “eventually” or “by and by”.
