Vermont is a state in the United States of America that is situated in the New England area in the northeastern part of the country. Based on the 2010 census, Vermont has a population of 630,337 people, making it the 2nd least populated state in the country, being more populated than only Wyoming. With a total area of 9,250 square miles, Vermont is also the 8th smallest state in the country. Vermont happens to be the solitary state in the New England region that does not share a border with the Atlantic Ocean. The state is bordered to the west by the state of New York. To the south, Vermont shares borders with Massachusetts. To its east, Vermont is bordered by the state of New Hampshire while to its north, Vermont is bordered by the Canadian province of Quebec.

Vermont was initially inhabited by 2 Native American tribes – the Iroquois and the Abenaki, both of whom speak the Algonquian language. A lot of modern day Vermont was claimed by France during the early colonial period. After experiencing defeat in the Seven Years’ War in 1763, Vermont passed over to the control of Great Britain. A number of settlers managed to create an independent state, naming it the Vermont Republic in 1777. Vermont is thus one of 17 American states which at some point of time had their own independent government. Vermont was the 14th state admitted to the Union, being granted statehood in 1791. Vermont was the first state to abolish slavery.

Vermont happens to be the country’s top producer of maple syrup. The capital city of Vermont is Montpelier while the largest city in the state is Burlington. The state of Vermont has the nickname of “The Green Mountain State” while the motto of the state is “Freedom and Unity”.
