Information about South Dakota

South Dakota is a state in the United States of America that is situated in the Midwestern part of the country. South Dakota shares its borders with those of the states of Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota and North Dakota. The Missouri River cuts through the state, dividing it into two, referred to as the ‘East River’ and the ‘West River’. Most of the people of the state reside in the eastern portion of the state owing to the presence of fertile soil in the region leading to the growth of a range of crops. The most common activity in the western half of the state is ranching. Based on the Census conducted in 2010, South Dakota is home to a little more than 800,000 residents making it the 5th least populated state in the country.

The southwestern part of South Dakota is home to The Black Hills which is a group of low mountains that are covered with pine trees. The Black Hills are considered a sacred location by the Sioux tribe of Native Americans. South Dakota is also home to Mount Rushmore, which is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the country and is famous all over the world. Other attractions located in the state include the Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer State Park, Deadwood, Wind Cave national park and Badlands.

The state is named after the Dakota and Lakota Sioux Native American Indian tribes. South Dakota used to be a portion of the Dakota Territory and was granted statehood on the 2nd of November, 1889.

The capital city of the state is Pierre while the largest city in the state is Sioux Falls. The official nickname of the state of South Dakota is “The Mount Rushmore State” while the motto of the state is “Under God the people rule”.
