Information about Rhode Island

Rhode Island is a state in the United States of America that is situated in the New England area of the country. Rhode Island happens to be the smallest among the 50 states in the United States. To the west, Rhode Island shares its borders with the state of Connecticut while to the north and east, Rhode Island is bordered by Massachusetts. To the southwest, Rhode Island shares a water border with Long Island, a part of the state of New York. Though Rhode Island has a small land area, it has a population of 1,052,567 people, making it the 2nd most densely populated state in the country.

The official name of the state is Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, which is derived from the union of 2 colonies. The colony of Rhode Island was established close to modern day Newport and is now known as Aquidneck Island. Providence Plantations was a colony that was founded by Roger Williams in the region which is today referred to as the city of Providence.

There are many theories as to how Aquidneck Island came to be called Rhode Island. Giovanni da Verrazzano, an explorer, noted in 1524 that the island near the mouth of the Narragansett Bay (i.e. Aquidneck Island) resembled Rhodes, the Greek island. The first use of the name ‘Rhode Island’ was by the previously mentioned Roger Williams in 1637. The name was officially changed from Aquidneck to Rhodes in 1644. Another possible theory is that, in 1625, an explorer called Adriaen Block described the island to have a reddish appearance. The Dutch words for ‘Red Island’ were ‘Roode Eylant’ which many suggested was later corrupted to Rhode Island.

The capital city of Rhode Island is Providence which also happens to be the largest city in the state. The state of Rhode Island has 2 nicknames – “The Ocean State” and “Little Rhody”. The motto of the state is simply the word “Hope”.
