Information about Oklahoma

Oklahoma is a state in the United States of America that is situated in the South Central part of the country. According to the Census conducted in 2010, Oklahoma is home to 3,751,351 people making it the 28th most populated state in the country. The state also covers an area of 68,667 square miles, thus being the 20th largest American state. To its east, Oklahoma shares borders with the states of Missouri and Arkansas while in the north, it is bordered by Kansas. In the northwest, it borders the state of Colorado while in the south, it shares a border with Texas.

Oklahoma is one of the chief producers of oil, natural gas as well as agriculture. Much of the state’s economy depends on telecommunications, energy, biotechnology and aviation. The main economic bases of the state are the cities of Tulsa and Oklahoma City.

Oklahoma features a diverse array of geographical features such as forests, prairies and mountains. Oklahoma is located in the Great Plains region of the United States and is prone to extreme weather conditions. Also worth noting is the fact that as many as 25 different Native American languages are found to be spoken in the state, more than any other state in the country. Other cultures prevalent in the state include Germans, English, Irish and Scottish. Oklahoma is also part of the Bible Belt and the presence of a statewide belief in evangelical Christianity is responsible for the political conservatism of the state.

The word ‘Oklahoma’ is sourced from the Native American Choctaw words ‘okla’ and ‘humma’ which means ‘red people. The capital city of the state is Oklahoma City which also happens to be the largest city in the state. Oklahoma is nicknamed “The Sooner State” and the motto of the state is “Labor omnia vincit”.
