Information about Ohio

Ohio is a state in the United States of America that is situated in the Midwestern part of the country. According to the Census conducted by the United States Census Bureau in 2010, Ohio is home to 11.5 million residents, making it the 7th most populated state in the country. Having an area of 44,825 square miles, Ohio is also the 9th most densely populated state in the United States.

Ohio is bordered by the state of Pennsylvania in the east, the Canadian province of Ontario in the north, the state of Indiana in the west, the state of Michigan in the northwest, by Kentucky in the south and by West Virginia in the southwest. Ohio also possesses water boundaries with Lake Erie as well as the Ohio River. Ohio is considered as a link between the Midwest and the Northeast and thus experiences a lot of cargo and traffic passes across its highways.

Ohio experiences a humid continental type of climate except in the southern region of the state where some areas experience a humid subtropical variety of climate. Summers are usually hot and humid while winters can range from being cool to very cold.

The Ohio state government is made up of the executive branch, the head of which is the Governor, the legislative branch which consists of the Ohio General Assembly and the judicial branch which is headed by the Supreme Court. Ohio is recognized as a bellwether and a swing state in the country’s national elections.

The name ‘Ohio’ is derived from ‘ohi-yo’, which is an Iroquois word meaning “great river”. Ohio was the 17th state to be admitted into the Union, in 1803. The capital city of Ohio is Columbus which also happens to be the largest city in the state. The nicknames for Ohio include “The Buckeye State”, “The Mother of Presidents”, “The Heart of It All” and “Birthplace of Aviation”. The motto of the state of Ohio happens to be “With God, all things are possible”.
