Information about North Dakota

North Dakota is a state in the United States of America that is situated in the Midwestern part of the country. North Dakota shares its northern border with Canada. To the east, it is bordered by the state of Minnesota while to the west it shares a border with the state of Montana. Finally, in the south, North Dakota is bordered by South Dakota. Based on the 2010 Census, North Dakota is the 3rd least populated state with a total population of 672,591 people. It is also the 19th biggest state in the country with an area of 70,700 square miles.

For over a decade, North Dakota has managed to hold on to a very strong and stable economy. The state unemployment rate is lower than the average for the country while the population and job growth of the state are also on the rise. A lot of these developments can be attributed to the Bakken oil shale fields in the western portion of the state. However, North Dakota has also experienced growth in the service and technology sectors.

North Dakota can be said to be located in the geographic center of North America and a stone marker in the city of Rugby recognizes itself as the “Geographic Center of the North American Continent”. The state is often considered to be a part of the Great Plains of the United States and is at times called the ‘High Plains’.

The capital city of North Dakota is Bismarck while the largest city in the state is Fargo. The state has a number of nicknames such as “The Peace Garden State”, “The Flickertail State”, “Heaven”, “The 701”, “Norse Dakota” and “The Roughrider State”. The motto of the state of North Dakota happens to be “Liberty and Union, Now and Forever, One and Inseparable”.
