New Hampshire is a state in the United States of America that is situated in the New England area in the northeastern part of the country. New Hampshire shares its southern border with the state of Massachusetts. To the west, it is bordered by the state of Vermont while to the east it is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and the state of Maine. In the north, New Hampshire shares its borders with the Canadian province of Quebec. According to the Census conducted in 2010, New Hampshire holds a population of 1,316,470 people, making it the 42nd most populous state in the country. It also covers an area of 9,304 square miles, thus being the 46th largest state.

New Hampshire was the first post colonial sovereign national in the New World after it secured its independence from Great Britain in January of 1776. It was the 9th state to sign the American Constitution, in 1788. Also, New Hampshire was the first among the 50 states to have a constitution of its own.

The chief recreational activities to be found in New Hampshire include snowmobiling, skiing and many other winter sports. This is due to the state possessing some of the biggest ski mountains in the East. Other popular activities in the state include mountaineering and hiking as well as motor sports which are held at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The Motorcycle Week, which is a famous motorcycle rally, is held at Weirs Beach each year in June.

The capital city of New Hampshire is Concord while the largest city in the state is Manchester. The nickname of New Hampshire is “The Granite State” while the motto of the state is “Live Free or Die”. The state of New Hampshire is named after the county of Hampshire located in the southern part of England.
