Information about Nebraska

Nebraska is a state in the United States of America that is situated in the Great Plains located in the Midwestern section of the country. Nebraska shares a northern border with South Dakota. To the east, the state is bordered by Iowa while to the southeast, it is bordered by Missouri. In the south, Nebraska shares a border with Kansas. To the southwest, Nebraska is bordered by Colorado while to the west, it is bordered by Wyoming.

According to the Census conducted in 2010, Nebraska is home to 1,826,341 people, making it the 38th most populated state in the country. Nebraska covers an area of 77,354 square miles, thus being the 16th largest state in the United States. Earlier, Nebraska was said to be a segment of the Great American Desert. Today, it is considered as one of the leading states in ranching and farming. Nebraska has large populations of the Ho-Chunk or Winnebago and Omaha American Indian tribes.

There are 2 chief land areas in the state – The Great Plains and the Dissected Till Plains. The Great Plains takes up most of the western part of Nebraska and consist of various smaller and varied land areas. The Dissected Till Plains were formed after the glaciers of the Ice Age retreated. These are made up of rolling hills and are situated around the cities of Lincoln and Omaha.

The name Nebraska is derived from the ancient Otoe words ‘Ni Brasge’ or perhaps the Omaha word ‘Ni Bthaska’, which means ‘flat water’. This term is in turn derived from the Platte River, a river which flows through the state. The capital city of Nebraska is Lincoln while the biggest city in the state is Omaha. The state is nicknamed the “Cornhusker State” while the motto of the state is “Equality before the law”.
