Information about Montana
Montana is a state in the United States of America situated in the Western portion of the country. The western part of the state is home to several different mountain ranges while the central portion has many smaller ranges as well. The state contains as many as 77 different ranges belonging to the Rocky Mountains. Based on the 2010 Census, Montana is home to 989,415 residents, making it the 44th most populated state in the United States. The 147,042 square miles that the state extends over makes it the 4th largest state in the country and thus, due to its low population, Montana has the third lowest population density among all the states in the country. Montana also happens to be the largest landlocked American state.
To the north, Montana shares borders with the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. In the east, it is bordered by South Dakota and North Dakota. In the south, it shares borders with Wyoming while in the west, it is bordered by the state of Idaho.
The economy of Montana is chiefly related to services. These include coal mining, oil mining, farming wheat and ranching in the eastern sections of the state along with rock mining, tourism and lumber in the western parts of the state. Tourism is significant in the state and millions of tourists visit the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument as well as the Glacier National Park every year. Montana also houses a total of 3 of the 5 entrances into Yellowstone National Park.
The name “Montana” is derived from the Spanish word ‘montana’ which means mountains, a reference to the numerous mountain ranges that are present in the state. Montana has a number of nicknames. These include “The Treasure State”, “The Big Sky Country”, “The Last Best Place” and “The Land of the Shining Mountains”. The motto of the state is “Oro y plata” which is Spanish for “Gold and Silver”.
