Information about Missouri

Missouri is a state in the United States of America situated in the Midwestern portion of the country. The state shares borders with as many as 8 other states, the highest among any other state in the country except Tennessee which also shares borders with 8 other states. In the north, Missouri is bordered by Iowa while to the east, it shares borders with Tennessee, Kentucky and Illinois. To the south, Missouri shares borders with Arkansas while to the west, Missouri is bordered by Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma.

Based on the 2010 Census, Missouri is home to 5,988,927 residents, thus making it the 18th most populated state in the country and the 5th most populated state in the Midwest. Missouri was obtained by the country from France as a portion of the famous Louisiana Purchase. Missouri was granted statehood in 1821 as the 24th state of the country.

Missouri contains a healthy mix of rural as well as urban culture and traditions and has for a long time been considered a bellwether state in terms of politics. Missouri contains both Southern as well as Midwestern influences and has been historically known as a border state. St. Louis is often referred to as the ‘western-most Eastern city’, while Kansas City is quite often referred to as the ‘eastern-most Western city’. The northern portion of the state consists of till plains where as the southern portion of the state consists of the Ozark Mountains. The Missouri River divides the state into 2 halves.

The capital city of Missouri is Jefferson City while the state’s largest city is Kansas City. The unofficial nickname of the state is “The Show Me State” while the motto of the state is “Salus populi suprema lex esto” which is Latin for “Let the good of the people be the supreme law”.
