Information about Mississippi

Mississippi is a state in the United States of America situated in Southern part of the country. The state shares its northern border with the state of Tennessee while it shares its eastern border with the state of Alabama. To the south, Mississippi is bordered by Louisiana as well as by a narrow coast of the Gulf of Mexico. Finally, to the west, the state is bordered by Arkansas and Louisiana.

Mississippi is known for the famous Mississippi Delta and apart from the Mississippi River, other major rivers present here include the Pearl River, the Pascagoula River, the Big Black River and Tombigbee River. Mississippi mostly consists of lowlands. Much of the state is a part of the East Gulf Coastal Plain which is composed of low hill like the North Central Hills and the Pine Hills.

The name Mississippi is sourced from the river of the same name. The river itself was named after “misiziibi”, the Ojibwe word meaning “Great River”. Based on the 2010 Census conducted by the US Census Bureau, the state has a population of 2,967,297 residents, making it the 31st most populous state in the country. The capital city of Mississippi is Jackson, which also happens to be the largest city in the state.

Mississippi is renowned for its literary and music heritage and has also branched out into other arts and art forms. The USA International Ballet Competition is held in the state capital every four years. The Magnolia Independent Film Festival takes place each year in Starkville. Musicians hailing from the Delta region of the state are considered to be instrumental in the development of blues music and in turn, the development of rock and roll music.

Mississippi is nicknamed “The Magnolia State” as well as “The Hospitality State”. The state motto is “Virtute et armis”.
