Information about Minnesota

Minnesota is a state in the United States of America situated in the Midwestern region of the country. According to the 2010 Census, Minnesota is home to 5.3 million people, making it the 21st most populated state in the country. Minnesota happens to be the northernmost state in the country aside from Alaska. It shares a water boundary with the states of Wisconsin and Michigan in the northeast while it shares a southern border with Iowa. To the west, it shares borders with South Dakota and North Dakota while in the north, it is bordered by the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Ontario.

Almost 60 per cent of the inhabitants of Minnesota reside in the Minneapolis-St Paul metropolitan region which is nicknamed as the “Twin Cities”. The area is a center for business, education, industry and transportation and also home to a renowned arts society. The rest of the state consists of the prairies which are now used for agriculture, deciduous forests located in the southeast which have now mostly been cleared and also North Woods which finds use in forestry and mining.

Minnesota is noted for being one of the healthiest states in the country and also for having a high rate of literacy. Most of the residents of Minnesota are descended from Germans and Scandinavians however ethnic and cultural variety and diversity have grown over the past couple of decades.

The capital city of Minnesota is Saint Paul while the largest city in the state is Minneapolis. The state has a number of nicknames such as “North Star State”, “Gopher State” and “The Land of 10,000 Lakes”. The state motto is “L’Etoile du Nord” which is French for “The Star of the North”. The state itself is named after the Dakota name “Mnisota” which was used to refer to the Minnesota River. When translated, “mnisota” means ‘somewhat clouded water’ or ‘sky tinted water’.
