Information about Michigan

Michigan is a state in the United States of America situated in the Great Lakes area of the country. Michigan shares its southern border with the states of Indiana and Ohio. To the west it shares water boundaries with Wisconsin and Illinois via Lake Michigan. From east to west, Michigan is bordered by the Great Lakes Erie, Huron, Michigan and Superior. According to the Census conducted in 2010, Michigan is home to 9,883,640 people, thus being the 8th most populated state in the country. It is also the 11th largest state in the country in terms of area, with a total land area of 96,716 square miles. These make it the 19th most densely populated state in the United States. The highest point of the state is Mount Arvon, which stands at 1,979 feet.

Michigan happens to be the only state in the country which is made up completely of 2 peninsulas. The peninsulas are known as the Lower Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula. The latter has been known to be important for the state’s economy with respect to natural resources and the tourism industry. Thanks to the Great Lakes, Michigan has the longest freshwater coastline of any other political division in the entire world.

Michigan has a number of nicknames. These include “The Wolverine State”, “The Great Lakes State”, “The Mitten State” and “The Water-Winter Wonderland”. The motto of the state is “Si quaeris peninsulam amoenma circumspice” which is Latin for “If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you”. The motto is a paraphrasing of the British architect Sir Christopher Wren’s epitaph regarding St. Paul’s Cathedral, which he designed. The state animal is considered to be the wolverine (as one of the nicknames suggests) while the state bird is the American Robin.

The capital city of Michigan is Lansing while the largest city in the state is Detroit.
