Information about Massachusetts

Massachusetts is a state in the United States of America located in the New England area of the northeastern section of the country. Massachusetts shares its southern border with the state of Rhode Island and with the state of Connecticut. To the west, it is bordered by the state of New York while on the north, it shares borders with New Hampshire and Vermont. Finally, it shares its eastern border with the Atlantic Ocean. Based on the Census conducted in 2010, Massachusetts is home to 6,547,629 residents, making it the 14th most populated state in the country and the most populous New England state. It also happens to be the third most densely inhabited state in the country. The state is divided into 2 separate metropolitan regions – the Springfield metropolitan area in the west and the Boston metropolitan region in the east.

Massachusetts holds an important place in the history and culture of the United States. Plymouth was the 2nd permanent settlement in North America by the English. The Puritans, who settled in the state in the 1630s, went on to dominate New England for several years after. Massachusetts is also home to Harvard University, Established in 1636, it is the oldest higher learning institution in the country. The infamous Salem Witch Trials of 1692 also took place in Massachusetts. The state also has a strong sporting heritage. Basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith in Springfield while volleyball was invented in Holyoke, both cities in western Massachusetts. In 2004, the state became the first in the United States to legally allow same sex marriage.

The capital city of Massachusetts is Boston which also happens to be its largest city. The nickname of the state is “The Bay State” and the state motto is “Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem”.
