Information about Maryland

Maryland is a state in the United States of America and is situated in the Mid Atlantic portion of the country. Maryland shares its southern and western borders with Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. To the north, Maryland is bordered by the state of Pennsylvania while to the east, it shares a border with Delaware. Maryland was the 7th state to sign the American Constitution.

According to the 2010 Census conducted by the United States Census Bureau, Maryland is home to 5,733,552 residents, making it the 19th most populated state in the country. It is also the 42nd largest state with an overall area of 12,407 square miles. Because of this, Maryland ranks as the 5th most densely populated state in the United States.

Maryland’s great geographical diversity has earned it the moniker “America in Miniature”. There are sandy dunes along with seagrass in the eastern part of the state while there are mountains and pine groves in the western portion. The state is cut into roughly 2 equal halves by the Chesapeake Bay. The counties that fall east of the Chesapeake Bay are referred to as the Eastern Shore. Chesapeake Bay has been so instrumental in boosting the economy and geography of the state that there have been many motions to change the official nickname of Maryland to the “Bay State”, even though the nickname has been that of Massachusetts for a long period of time.

The capital city of Maryland is Annapolis while the largest city of the state is Baltimore. Maryland has a number of different nicknames. These include “Old Line State”, “Little America”, the previously mentioned “America in Miniature” and “Free State”. The motto of the state is “Fatti maschii, parole femine” which when translated to English from Latin means “Manly deeds, womanly words”.
