Information about Louisiana
Louisiana is a state in the United States of America and is situated in the southern part of the country. Louisiana is the sole state in the United States where the political subdivisions are referred to as parishes. Parishes are basically local governments that function like counties. The largest parish in terms of number of residents is the East Baton Rouge Parish while the largest in terms of area is the Cameron Parish.
Louisiana contains a mixture of various cultural and linguistic heritages and the lifestyle and tradition of the state has influences from African, Native American, Spanish and French cultures. Before becoming an American state in the 19th century, Louisiana was a colony belonging to Spain and France. Louisiana was further impacted by the importing of several African slaves throughout the 18th century which thus helped in infusing the Louisiana lifestyle with West African culture and traditions.
Louisiana shares its western border with the state of Texas, while to the north it is bordered by Arkansas. To the east, it shares a border with Mississippi and it shares a border with the Gulf of Mexico to the south. Louisiana mostly experiences a subtropical humid climate characterized by long, humid and hot summers and mild and short winters. Its location also makes it susceptible to numerous hurricanes and a large number of hurricanes have negatively impacted the state over the past century.
The state is named after King Louis XIV of France who ruled from 1643-1715. Upon beingclaimed by Rene-Robert Cavalier, Sieur de La Salle, it was named ‘La Louisiane’, which translates to ‘Land of Louis’. The capital of Louisiana is Baton Rouge while its largest city is New Orleans. Louisiana has a number of nicknames. The official nickname is “The Pelican State”. Other nicknames include “Bayou State”, “Sugar State”, “Sportsman’s Paradise”, “Creole State” and “Child of the Mississippi”.
