Information about Kentucky

Kentucky is a state in the United States of America and is situated in the East Central part of the country. According to the United States Census Bureau, Kentucky is classified as a southern state and an East South Central state to be specific. The state is officially known as the ‘Commonwealth of Kentucky’, and is one of only 4 states in the country to have that title (along with Virginia, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania). Kentucky was originally a segment of Virginia but was granted statehood in 1792.

Kentucky shares borders with as many as 7 different states. West Virginia borders it on the east while Virginia borders it in the southeast. In the south, Kentucky shares a border with Tennessee while to the west, it shares a border with Missouri. Indiana and Illinois both share borders with Kentucky to the northwest while Ohio borders Kentucky in the northeast and north.

Kentucky is home to varied environments and a plethora of different resources. It features the longest cave system in the entire world – the Mammoth Cave National Park. It is also home to the largest length of navigable streams and waterways in the entire country as well as the 2 biggest man-made lakes that are east of the Mississippi River. The country’s most productive coalfield is also located in Kentucky. Aside from all this, Kentucky is also famous for bourbon distilleries, automobile production, college basketball, tobacco, bluegrass music as well as horse racing.

Kentucky is nicknamed “The Bluegrass State” which is a reference to the bluegrass that appears in several pastures all across the state. The bluegrass helps in breeding livestock of a high quality, particularly thoroughbred race horses. The state motto is “United we stand, divided we fall”. The capital of the state is Frankfort while the largest city is Louisville.
