Information about Kansas

Kansas is a state in the United States of America and is situated in the Midwestern region of the country. For a long time now, Kansas has been home to several and many varied Native American tribes. In the eastern portion of the state, these tribes usually inhabited villages situated along river valleys. Over on the western portion of the state, the tribes were semi nomadic and hunted bison. The first European settlers arrived in the state in the 1830s and the state was officially opened for settlers in 1854. The area became infamous for a large amount of violence as both abolitionist and pro slavery settlers rushed to the new state to determine whether Kansas would be a slave state or a free state. This period is often referred to as the “Bleeding of Kansas”. Ultimately, the abolitionists prevailed and Kansas joined the Union of Free states in 1861. Presently, Kansas is one of the most agriculturally productive states in the country and yields great amounts of wheat, sunflowers and sorghum.

To the north, Kansas shares a border with the state of Nebraska while on the south it is bordered by Oklahoma. To the east, Kansas is bordered by the state of Missouri while on the west, Kansas shares a border with Colorado. The state is equidistant from the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. The capital of Kansas is Topeka while its largest city is Wichita, which happens to be the home of the world famous Pizza Hut.

The name Kansas is taken from the Kansas River. The Kansas River in turn gets its name from the Kansa Native American tribe who lived in the region. The name ‘Kansa’ means ‘people of the south wind’ or ‘people of the wind’. Kansas is officially nicknamed as “The Sunflower State” while an alternative nickname for it is “The Wheat State”. The state motto is “Ad astra per aspera”.
