Information about Georgia

Georgia is a state in the United States of America and is situated in the southeastern section of the country. To the south, Georgia shares a border with the state of Florida while on the west, it shares a border with Alabama. In the north, Georgia is surrounded by the states of North Carolina and Tennessee while on the east it shares a border with South Carolina and the Atlantic Ocean. The northern portion of the state is part of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which is itself a part of the great Appalachian Mountain range. The highest point in the state is Brasstown Bald which stands tall at a height of 4,784 feet. The piedmont in the center of the state stretches from the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains to the fall line. Here, the rivers fall down onto the continental coastal plain located in the southern portion of the state.

According to the Census conducted in 2010, Georgia is home to 9,687,653 inhabitants and is thus, the 9th most populated state in the United States. In terms of area, Georgia is the 24th largest state in the country, covering a land area of 59,425 sq. miles. Also to be noted is the fact that Georgia is the largest state in terms of area east of the Mississippi River.

Georgia is named after King George II of Great Britain. It was granted statehood in 1732 and was the last among the first Thirteen Colonies. Georgia was also the fourth state to sign the American Constitution.

The capital city of the state of Georgia is Atlanta which also happens to be the largest state in the city. The state has a number of nicknames such as “The Peach State” and “The Empire State of the South”. The motto of the state is “Wisdom, Justice, Moderation”.
