Information about Florida

Florida is a state in the United States of America and is situated in the southeastern section of the country, on the Gulf and Atlantic coasts. On the west, Florida is bordered by the Gulf of Mexico and on the east by the Atlantic Ocean. To the north, Florida shares borders with the states of Georgia and Alabama. According to the 2010 Census, Florida is home to 18,801,310 people, thereby making it the 4th most populated state in the United States. Comprising a land area of 65,755 sq. miles, Florida is the 22nd largest state in the country.

Most of Florida is located on the peninsula between the Straits of Florida, the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. The geography of the state is thus dominated by the coastline and the state suffers from a constant threat of hurricanes. Florida boasts the longest coastline among the contiguous states of the country which stretches for about 1350 miles. The climate of Florida usually varies from tropical in the southern parts of the state to subtropical in the northern sections. Florida is home to the Everglades, one of the world’s most well known national parks, which houses, among others, such animals as the Florida panther, the manatee and the American alligator.

The culture of Florida is a mixture of various different races that can be found here including Native American, African American, Hispanic and Europeans. Florida has been known to attract a number of writers such as Tennessee Williams, Ernest Hemingway and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. Besides writers, the state has also drawn a number of athletes and celebrities and is world famous for water sports, auto racing, tennis and golf.

The capital of Florida is Tallahassee while the largest city is Jacksonville. Florida is known by the nickname of “The Sunshine State” and the state motto is “In God We Trust”.
