Information about Delaware
Delaware is a state in the United States of America and is situated in the Mid Atlantic part of the United States on the Atlantic Coast. It shares borders to the west and to the south with the state of Maryland. On the east, it shares a border with New Jersey, while to the north, Delaware shares a border with the state of Pennsylvania. The name ‘Delaware’ comes from Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr. West was an English nobleman and also the first colonial governor of Virginia.
Delaware is situated in the Delmarva Peninsula and is the second smallest state in the country in terms of area (after the state of Rhode Island). Delaware consists of 3 counties. The northernmost of the counties is New Castle, followed by Kent and Sussex as one moves south. Kent and Sussex are mostly agricultural in nature while New Castle is more industrialized.
Prior to being explored in the 1500s by Europeans, Delaware was home to large number of Native American groups such as the Lenape tribe in the northern part of the state and the Nanticoke tribe in the southern part. At first, Delaware was taken over in 1631 by Dutch traders at Zwaanendael, which is situated next to modern day Lewes. Delaware was among the 13 colonies that took part in the American Revolution and in 1787, became the first ever state to ratify the American Constiution. Hence, one of the state’s nicknames is “The First State”.
The capital city of Delaware is Dover while its largest city is Wilmington. While it is the second smallest state in the US, in terms of population, it is the 45th largest, and hence is the 6th most densely populated state in the country. Aside from “The First State”, other nicknames for the state include “The Small Wonder”, “The Diamond State” and “Blue Hen State”. The state motto is “Liberty and independence.”
