Information about Connecticut

Connecticut is a state in the United States of America is located in the New England region in the north eastern part of the United States. Connecticut is bordered in the east by the state of Rhode Island, while it shares borders in the north with Massachusetts and in the south and west with New York. It shares a water boundary with New York in the form of the Long Island Sound.

Connecticut is named after the Connecticut River, which cuts the state into two roughly equal halves. The capital of the state is Hartford, while the largest city in the state is Bridgeport. A lot of the western and southern parts of Connecticut fall under the New York metropolitan area.

Having a population of 3.5 million people, Connecticut is the 29th most inhabited state in the United States and is the 48th largest state. These figures make it the 4th most densely populated among the 50 states in the country.

The first settlements in Connecticut were set up by the English back in the 1630s. The Connecticut Colony was founded by Thomas Hooker and a group of followers traveling from the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Thanks to the Connecticut River, the Long Island Sound and the Thames River, Connecticut has a famous maritime heritage. Connecticut is also known for its financial and insurance service industries. According to the 2010 US Census, Connecticut has the highest per capita income, the highest median household income as well as the highest Human Development Index among all states in the United States. The state has a number of nicknames – “The Nutmeg State”, “The Provisions State” and “The Land of Steady Habits”. The state motto is ‘Qui transtulit sustinet’. The residents of the state of Connecticut are referred to either as Connecticuters or Nutmeggers, alluding to one of the state’s nicknames.
