Information about Colorado

Colorado is a state in the United States of America and covers a sizable portion of the Rocky Mountain range along with the northeastern segment of the Colorado Plateau. The state also comprises of the western parts of the Great Plains. The state can be included among the Mountain states of the country.

The state of Colorado is surrounded by the state of Wyoming in the north, by Kansas and Nebraska in the east and north east respectively. To the south, Colorado is bordered by New Mexico and also a small part of Oklahoma. To the west, Colorado shares a border with Utah. The states of Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Arizona all converge at a single point common to all four states known as the Four Corners, which is the center of the American Southwest. Colorado also holds the distinction of being one of just 3 states in the United States that do no have any natural borders. The other 2 such states are Utah and Wyoming.

The landscape of Colorado consists of a diverse mix of high plains, canyons, forests, mountains, mesas, plateaus, deserts and rivers. According to the 2010 Census, Colorado consists of a total of 5,029,196 residents. The capital of the state is Denver which is also the most inhabited city in Colorado.

The state is named after the Colorado River, which was referred to as Rio Colorado by explorers from Spain who named it for the red silt which the river transported from the mountain ranges. Colorado was granted statehood in 1876 and was the 38th state admitted to the union. The nickname of the state is the ‘Centennial State’ since it was granted statehood on the 100th year of American independence. The state motto is ‘Nil sine numine’ which is Latin for ‘Nothing without providence’. The highest point in the state is Mount Ebert, standing at a height of 14,440 feet.
