Information about Arkansas

Arkansas is a state in the United States of America and is situated in the southern portion of the country. The state of Arkansas shares its borders with six other states in the country. To the north, it is bordered by Missouri. In the east, it is bordered by the states of Mississippi and Tennessee. To the south, it is bordered by Louisiana. Texas borders it in the southwest while Oklahoma shares a border with Arkansas to the west. The eastern border of the state of Arkansas mostly consists of the Mississippi River.

The state of Arkansas consists of a variety of geographic features that include the mountainous areas of the Ouachita Mountains and the Ozarks and also the eastern lowlands next to the Mississippi River. The capital of Arkansas is Little Rock which also happens to be the most populated city in the state. The city of Little Rock is located in the central section of the state.

The name ‘Arkansas’ is a French pronunciation of ‘akakaze’, which is a Quapaw tribe word that means ‘land of downriver people’. Alternatively, it could also refer to the Sioux word ‘akakaze’ which means ‘people of the south wind’.

Arkansas is usually characterized by a subtropical humid type of climate. The state is just close enough to the Gulf of Mexico to have its weather affected by the water body. Arkansas usually experiences summers that are humid and hot along with winters that are a bit more dry and cold. The state is known to experience extremes in weather. Thunderstorms, hail, snow storms and tornadoes occur throughout the year and the state experiences approximately 60 days worth of thunderstorms.

The present nickname of Arkansas is ‘The Natural State’ which replaced the former nickname of the state, ‘The Land of Opportunity’. The state motto is ‘Regnat populus’.
