Information about Alaska
Alaska is a state in the United States of America and is located in the northwestern portion of the continent of North America. The state is the biggest state in the United States of America in terms of land area and is bordered by Canada in the east, the Pacific Ocean in the south and in the west and by the Arctic Ocean in the north. Aside from being the largest state in the United States, Alaska is also the least densely populated in the country. According to the Census conducted in 2010, Alaska is home to 710,231 people, around half of whom live within the metropolitan area of Anchorage.
The United States bought Alaska from the Russian Empire on the 30th of March, 1867 for a sum of $7.2 million which in today’s market would come to approximately $113 million. The land rate came to 2 cents for each acre or $4.74 for every square kilometer. Numerous changes in administration took place throughout the history of Alaska. It was recognized as an organized or incorporated territory in May of 1912 while it finally became a state (the 49th of the country) on January 3rd, 1959.
The word ‘Alaska’ was coined while the state was still a part of the Russian Empire and comes from the Aleut word ‘alaxsxaq’ which means ‘the mainland’. Another name for the state is Alyeska, which is an Aleut word that translates to ‘the great land’.
The capital of Alaska is Juneau, while the biggest city in the state, as previously mentioned, is Anchorage. Its land area of 663,268 square miles makes it the largest US state in terms of area. However, with a population of just 710,231, it is also the 47th most populous state. The nickname of the state is ‘The Last Frontier’ while the state motto is ‘North to the Future’. Mt. McKinley is located in Alaska, which, at a height of 20,335 feet, is the highest peak in all of North America.
