Information about Alabama

Alabama is a state in the United States of America and is situated in the south eastern portion of the country. The state of Alabama is surrounded by Tennessee to its north, by the Gulf of Mexico and by Florida to it south, and by the states of Georgia and Mississippi to its east and west respectively. According to the Census conducted in 2010, Alabama is home to 4.7 million inhabitants and is hence ranked as the 23rd most populous state in the United States. When it comes to land area, Alabama is the 30th largest state in the country.

Throughout the period of time between the American Civil War and the Second World War, Alabama was in an economic slump much like other similar states in the southern part of the country. The rise of industrialization and urbanization in cities notwithstanding, Alabama continued to be dominated mostly by white agricultural interests until the 1960s. After the end of the Second World War, Alabama witnessed economic progress and the state went from being solely interested in agriculture to branching out to various different industries as well as developing educational facilities and services in the state. Also, the growth and expansion of numerous military based installations, with respect to the US Air Force or the US Army, led to an increase in the number of state jobs available.

The capital of Alabama is Montgomery while the largest city in terms of number of residents is Birmingham, which is home to 212,237 people as of the census conducted in 2010, while the biggest city in terms of total land area is Huntsville. The unofficial nickname of the state is the Yellowhammer state, which is a reference to the state bird of Alabama while another nickname for the state is ‘Heart of Dixie’.
